What is CBD?

CBD, or Cannabidiol is a phytocannabinoid discovered in the year 1940, one that accounts for close to 40% of the overall extract from the marijuana plant, making it the second-most prominent ingredient in cannabis. Besides being an active ingredient in Cannabis, CBD can also be found in industrial hemp. Contemporary research has shown it to be capable of effecting and ultimately benefiting a large number of biological processes through the endocannabinoid system (ECS).

In recent times, the usage of CBD products has been popularised due to the overwhelming evidence in favour of its positive benefits for the health of both humans and animals as well as through the endorsement of several notable athletes, celebrities, and respected figures within the relevant areas of research.

What are cannabinoids?

Cannabinoids are naturally occurring compounds in the cannabis plant which include CBD, THC, and a host of others. All of these cannabinoids are responsible for the effects that one experiences when using industrial hemp, medical marijuana or any other related products.

What are phtyo-cannabinoids?

CBD and THC are both classed as phytocannabinoids. Simply put, phytocannabinoids are compounds derived from plants and differ from those produced by the body, which are known as endocannabinoids.

What is the ECS?

The endocannabinoid system, or ECS, refers to a system made up of endocannabinoids. The term “Cannabinoid” refers to compounds found in cannabis plant and “endo” is short for “endogenous,” which means that it is produced naturally inside of your body.

The term “endocannabinoid” simply means cannabis like substances that are naturally produced by our body. The system is present and active in both humans and mammals whether or not they use cannabis or CBD products due to the fact that endocannabinoids are molecules produced by your body.

The ECS involves three vital components: endocannabinoids, receptors, and enzymes. The discovery of the ECS is considered to be a breakthrough in understanding how our body works to protect itself from various imbalances and help achieve homeostasis.

These endocannabinoids then work by binding to the two main endocannabinoid receptors in our body – CB1 and CB2 . This process signals the ECS that it needs to take action. The CB1 receptors are most commonly found in our central nervous system whereas the CB2 receptors are mostly found in our peripheral nervous system, especially immune cells.

Endocannabinoids can bind to either of these receptors and the resulting effect depends upon where the receptor is located and which endocannabinoid it binds to.

The third core component in the ECS, are enzymes that are responsible for breaking down endocannabinoids once they’ve carried out their function.

Recent research has proved that the ECS carries out various functions and has been linked to a host of processes including sleep, mood, inflammation, muscle formation, memory and recognition among others.

What are the CB1 and CB2 receptors?

The CB1 and CB2 receptors are the two primary receptors in the endocannabinoid system. The CB1 receptors are most commonly found in our central nervous system whereas the CB2 receptors are mostly found in our peripheral nervous system, especially immune cells. CBD effects how these receptors interact with the body and its chemicals.

How does CBD work?

CBD works by affecting the endocannabinoid system in a fashion not too dissimilar to the manner in which THC operates. Where THC attaches to receptors, CBD affects how they produce signals while also increasing the body’s creation of cannabinoids and influencing several other prominent receptors – including opioid and serotonin receptors.

CBD vs THC?

Most people are more familiar with the cannabinoid THC, the ingredient in cannabis that will get the user ‘high’. CBD, on the other hand, is a non-intoxicant and as a result, none of the effects experienced will provide the same sense of euphoria that one would expect from THC. In fact, oils and other products that are derived from CBD have an anti-psychotic effect.

What is the entourage effect?

Recent evidence has suggested that CBD, THC, and other compounds can actually work together, allowing their effects to amplify – potentially providing benefits that can even outweigh the singular effects of CBD or THC alone. This collective effect is known as the entourage effect.

What is the difference between Full Spectrum / Broad Spectrum and CBD Isolate?

Full or Broad Spectrum include oil that has been extracted from the whole hemp flower and contain the widest possible profile of cannabinoids and terpenes. The only difference between Full Spectrum and Broad Spectrum is the absence of THC in broad spectrum extracts. CBD Isolate comes after heavy processing until only the pure CBD molecule remains, which means all other important cannabinoids and terpenes are lost.

Our products are defined as Broad Spectrum CBD as they contain a host of cannabinoids, 40 + terpenes and 0% THC.

Will I get ‘high’ after using a CBD product?

Most people are more familiar with the cannabinoid THC, the ingredient in cannabis that will get the user ‘high’. CBD, on the other hand, is a non-intoxicant and as a result, none of the effects experienced will provide the same sense of euphoria that one would commonly expect from THC. In fact, oils and other products that are derived from CBD can have an antipsychotic effect and according to several studies, can actually counteract the effects of THC.

So what are the effects of using CBD products?

Due to the relatively recent growth in its exposure, more research is needed to provide a concrete level of structure to the claims associated with the usage of CBD products. With that being said, there is an overwhelming level of anecdotal research and case reports showing the incredibly positive effects of using CBD in both treating a wide range of health issues as well as general day-to-day life.

Is CBD legal?

Our CBD products are completely legal and adhere to all of the necessary regulations that allow them to be distributed to the general public. In Ireland and most of the world, there is a legal requirement that products must contain less than 0.2% THC. Our CBD products fall well below that mark as they contain 0% THC and are hence legal in most parts of the world!

Are there any dangers involved?

According to a report turned in by the World Health Organisation, CBD usage has in no way caused anything resembling a dependance or any long-standing psychological effects. “In humans, CBD exhibits no effects indicative of any abuse or dependence potential. To date, there is no evidence of public health related problems associated with the use of pure CBD.”

The same study goes on to describe CBD as “both safe, non-toxic, and with very few side effects.”

Is there an expiry date for CBD products?

Our CBD products, when stored in a cool, dry, and dark place, will generally enjoy a shelf life extending up to two years. Keep the dropper clean and the liquid’s exposure to air to a minimum to help prevent the oil from losing its potency earlier than expected.

What makes hemp plants different from marijuana plants?

Both hemp and marijuana come from the cannabis sativa plant family but differ in terms of their levels of THC. Industrial hemp is made primarily from cannabis sativa and is bred specifically to produce the lowest amount of THC possible while maintaining a natural richness in CBD.
